Product Description

Temporary "double-glazing" - reduce condensation and heat loss!

These DIY window insulation kits are perfect options for those in rental accommodation or anyone looking for a quick, cheap solution that helps keep your house warm whilst saving on energy bills.

What is a DIY window kit?

Window kits work like temporary double-glazing.

Put simply, it is a thin, clear piece of plastic film that can be cut to the size of your window frame. You apply this to the inside of your window using the provided adhesive tape - this is fitted onto the frame of the window, not the glass itself. Using a hair-dryer you warm the plastic, causing it to shrink tight and wrinkle-free around the window - making it clear to look out from. This plastic film acts like the “double” layer of glass, creating a pocket of air between the cold window pane and the warmth of the your home and providing a further barrier to cold air coming in and warm air leaking out.

For more detailed information of how these work please visit this page.

The benefits:

  • It gives insulation properties similar to double glazing

  • It prevents condensation

  • It reduces heating loss

  • Quick and easy to install

  • Cheap! (kits are available in $25, $35 and $45 multi-window and patio door sized packs)

  • Reduces power use to help cut CO2 emissions.

Research by Victoria University Masters student Nick Smith shows a significant cost saving of using window insulation kits. Read his research summary in a BRANZ report here.

350 is selling insulation kits at a low-price, with just a slight mark-up. This means not only do you get to keep warmer and save on your power bill this year (which reduces CO2 of course!), but you also make a valuable contribution to 350's work.

What windows are suitable?

These kits are most effective when used on a window frame that is 10mm-20mm thick.  They can be installed on wooden or aluminum frames. It is not recommended for use on plaster, wallboard, unvarnished wood or frames where paint may come off from the tape holding the window kits down.

The 3M window insulation kits fit the following area. Depending on the size of your window these kits may go further. Please note, you cut the film to fit whatever size window you may have.

Size (mm)
Area (m2)
2 window kit 2130 x 1570 3.35
5 window kit 5330 x 1570 8.37
Patio door kit 2840 x 2130 6.05

Some things to note:

  • Once the insulation is up you will not be able to clean the window pane, so make sure you clean it before installing the window kits.

  • If you install the window kits on wooden frames when there has already been a lot of moisture in the air, condensation might form between the two layers as moisture releases from the wood. It is best to wait until your frames are dry to apply this kits - so either apply before winter or after a few days of sun!

  • These kits may not be suitable in houses with children and pets who may be likely to poke holes in the plastic.

  • The tape for these kits may leave a stain if left on for too long, and or if applied to flakey paint it may damage the paint on removal.

  • These window kits are a temporary option to double-glazing.  We recommend you practice applying this film on a window that is not too obvious to begin with to get the application technique correct.
